Craig Handley (born July 6, 1977) is a British film director. He was born in Merthyr Tydfil and attended Cyfarthfa High School. He is known for making innovative, crowd-pleasing independent short films with microscopic budgets and fast schedules by Hollywood standards. Handley is the oldest child of an Irish and American family and shoots and produces his films in Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff. Career

Handley grew up shooting mainly science fiction films on a Video8 camera which he was given as a Christmas present, by his father, in 1991. However, his dream of becoming a professional film-maker was completely destroyed by an un-cooperative school careers officer, who Handley claims, suggested he seek more "realistic" and "less fanciful" career options. In 2002, after leaving a career with his local police force, Handley returned to film-making with the short film, "Hlp Me". A chance encounter with a television location manager and sheer persistence, provided Handley with his first break in to the industry, as a production runner on the ITV1 Wales soap opera, Nuts & Bolts. It was while working on the soap, that Handley first met Geoff Evans, a like-minded director of the same age who was working on the show as a 2nd Assistant Director.


Collaborations

Handley has a history of collaboration with Geoff Evans:

  • He wrote the screenplay for On All Floors, which went on to gain international distribution and positive critical reviews.
  • He performed Assistant Director duties on Evans' renowned youth drama, Boundaries
  • He wrote the screenplay for another of Evans' short films, Friends And Alloys
  • Evans performed Assistant Director duties on Handley's feature film, Toss
  • They are working together on Ash's Ashes. A collaboration due in 2006.

He has also collaborated with Andrew Chainey, directing I'm Crossing Here as well as adapting a Welsh-laguage stage drama, One More Chance into a hard-hitting short film which is used by police forces and education boards, throughout the United Kingdom to warn teenagers of the consequences of committing anti-social behaviour. Family & Health

Handley was forced to give up his career with the police, due to him suffering from peritonitis and septicaemia following a mis-diagnosis of gastro-entiritis when, in fact, he had a ruptured appendix. In November 2005, Handley was diagnosed with relapsing/remitting Multiple Sclerosis.
