Some mostly older shields in Florida add a "C-" before the number, as the original county roads in Florida were turned over from the state, and instead of replacing the shields the "C-" was added in the state road shield. A county highway (also county road, county route, usually abbreviated CH or CR, and rural route, or RR) is a road in the United States that is usually maintained by the county highway department. Numbering may be coordinated by the state. Shields are usually a yellow-on-blue pentagon or a black-on-white rectangle, or black text on a white rectangle (largely older signs). The majority of states have county highways, as they have unincorporated areas. In addition, any county-maintained road, whether or not it is given a signed number, can be called a county road. Depending on the state and county, this can be named in the traditional way, and/or assigned a grid reference, such as 2000 E (a north-south road running 20 blocks east of the zero point). Many other systems are also used; some counties rather arbitrarily assign numbers to all maintained roads, but don't mark them (or only mark them on standard street sign blades). GRID can refer to : GRID computing short for gay-related immune deficiency, a former name for AIDS. Many county roads, especially in rural areas, are not major thoroughfares and receive little or no maintenance. Therefore, they may be in poor condition or even unpaved. It can be common to find minor county roads in backwoods areas that are just sand or gravel, seeing only foot and four-wheel drive traffic periodically. A residential county road might be in better shape, enjoy better property values, be assigned a street name, and receive regular paving and maintainance by the city government.
