Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,470 km˛ (568 mi˛). 1,461 km˛ (564 mi˛) of it is land and 9 km˛ (4 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 36,655 people, 14,356 households, and 10,164 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km˛ (65/mi˛). There are 16,107 housing units at an average density of 11/km˛ (29/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.35% White, 1.09% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 14,356 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $34,701, and the median income for a family is $41,676. Males have a median income of $31,095 versus $21,276 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,364. 9.10% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.40% of those under the age of 18 and 9.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Coshocton was once the capital of the Delaware Indians.
The COSHOCTON COUNTY FAIR is held from late September through early October at the county fairgrounds in Coshocton.
The beginning of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1830 with a port in Roscoe opened the isolated interior of the state and transformed the backwoods settlement into a thriving port.
