Western Achaia | (762 words)
The city of Kato Achaia, 22 km far from Patras, with a population of 8.000 habitants, is the commercial, cultural and administrative centre of the area.
The town of Achaia was probably established after the destruction and the devastation of Dymi (27 BC.) The first cell of the new town seemed to be the Roman colony.
During the years of Revolution in 1821 Kato Achaia met a lot of adventures and was the apple of discord between the Greeks and the Turkish.

a-kā´ya (Ἀχαιά, Achaiá): The smallest country in the Peloponnesus lying along the southern shore of the Corinthian Gulf, north of Arcadia and east of Elis.
These cities were on the coast and formed a confederation of smaller communities, which in the last century of the independent history of Greece attained to great importance (Achaean League).
