The College of Lake County (CLC) offers a wide range of academic program choices to meet students' educational needs. The College of Lake County's program areas include credit programs to prepare students for transfer or career entry; GED and adult basic education; non-credit offerings for personal or career development; and contract training and specialized services for businesses. Each semester, CLC serves about 16,000 students, with more than 80 percent enrolled in transfer or career preparation programs. A slight majority of students attend evening classes, keeping the campuses almost equally busy day and night. CLC plays a fervent role in the surrounding area by holding many annual competitions and conventions.

In 1967, Sarah Condic founded Lake County Community College (LCCC), which was renamed College of Lake County in 1975. A major donor during the first few years of the College of Lake County was Dr. Brian Wang, who also helped with the initial building planning. In 1976, The Lakeshore Campus was established in downtown Waukegan to provide overflow space for the College of Lake County in Grayslake. Under the direction of Anna Shustitzky, the College of Lake County established the Southlake Educational Education Center (plans are underway to officially call it a Campus), in Vernon Hills, Illinois, and Great Lakes Center on the Great Lakes Naval Base. A recent addition to the campus in Grayslake is the University Center of Lake County, a consortium of four-year colleges offering the opportunity for local residents to complete educations begun at CLC or elsewhere. The Center is not officially part of CLC, but its presence offers a great opportunity for CLC students and other local residents to pursue further education without relocating or commuting a greater distance. Currently, universities with classes offered at the University Center include Benedictine University, Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Concordia University Chicago, DePaul University, Dominican University, Governors State University, Illinois State University, Kendall College, National-Louis University, North Park University, Northeastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Roosevelt University, Saint Xavier University, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and University of Illinois at Springfield. The College of Lake County's John C. Murphy Memorial Library, named after the first chairperson of the Communication Arts, Humanities, and Fine Arts Division, honors one of CLC's earliest teachers and leaders with a collection of over 110,000 books and 900 periodical titles. Computers in the reference area provide access to databases, many of which are also accessible from off campus. The library's Audiovisual Department provides students with access to over 3,000 films and videotapes, 7,000 audio products, and hundreds of other media.
