Colebrook is a town located in Litchfield County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,471.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 85.3 km˛ (32.9 mi˛). 81.5 km˛ (31.5 mi˛) of it is land and 3.8 km˛ (1.5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 4.40% water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,471 people, 566 households, and 419 families residing in the town. The population density is 18.0/km˛ (46.7/mi˛). There are 656 housing units at an average density of 8.0/km˛ (20.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.01% White, 0.68% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.88% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 2.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 566 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% are married couples living together, 5.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% are non-families. 19.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $58,684, and the median income for a family is $64,286. Males have a median income of $42,647 versus $35,987 for females. The per capita income for the town is $29,789. 2.6% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Colebrook is the Waypoint community for an area that includes Pittsburg, Clarksville, Stewartstown, Dixville, Columbia, and Stratford, NH, and Canaan, Lemington, and Bloomfield, VT. Its visitor center is located on a scenic bend of the Connecticut on Route 3, 1.5 miles north of Colebrook's downtown.
Colebrook and Pittsburg serve as the provisioners for recreation in the backcountry.
Colebrook is proud of its numerous, if small, restaurants, and the church suppers and high school concerts and plays that take the place of movies and theaters.
That it is a real wonderland hidden away in the Colebrook mountain is not to be doubted for they could hear running water a long distance away.
