Born in 1914, Clifford Irving first stood for election to the House of Keys in 1955 and served from 1955 to 1962, 1966 to 1981 and 1984 to 1986 for the constituencies of Douglas North, Douglas West and Douglas East. In 1987 he was elevated to the LegCo where he remained until 1995. In 1971 he was appointed Chairman of the Tourist Board and oversaw the Island's tourism flourish for a decade, famously offering a £10,000 reward to anyone finding a mermaid in Manx waters. Then in 1977 he was made Chairman of the Executive Council, the forerunner to the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man. He held this position until 1981. He died on July 13, 2004, shortly after his 90th birthday.
