Cherry County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 6,148. Its county seat is Valentine6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 15,565 km˛ (6,010 mi˛). 15,438 km˛ (5,961 mi˛) of it is land and 127 km˛ (49 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.82% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,148 people, 2,508 households, and 1,710 families residing in the county. The population density is 0/km˛ (1/mi˛). There are 3,220 housing units at an average density of 0/km˛ (0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 94.19% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 3.25% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.72% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,508 households out of which 31.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.90% are married couples living together, 6.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.80% are non-families. 28.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.98.


In the county the population is spread out with 27.00% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 17.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.60 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $29,268, and the median income for a family is $36,500. Males have a median income of $23,705 versus $17,277 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,943. 12.30% of the population and 9.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.40% of those under the age of 18 and 14.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

With 6,048 square miles, Cherry County is by far the largest in total land area of all Nebraska counties and ranks as one of the country's largest.
Finally, the county seat of Valentine makes the news reports each February 14 when literally thousands of cards and letters from across the United States are received by the local post office, which in turn places a special Valentine stamp on each before re-mailing them to the addressee.
Cherry County's boundaries were established by the Legislature in 1883.
