Encyclopedia > Cellular compartment

Cellular compartments in cell biology comprise all closed parts within a cell whose lumen is usually surrounded by a single or double lipid layer membrane. Most organelles are compartments like the mitochondria, chloroplasts, the cell nucleus or the Golgi apparatus. Smaller elements like vesicles, and sometimes even microtubules can also be counted as compartments. Cell biology (also called cellular biology or cytology, from the Greek kytos, container) is an academic discipline which studies cells. ... A diagonal molecular slab from the DPPC lipid bilayer simulation1; color scheme: PO4 - green, N(CH3)3 - violet, water - blue, terminal CH3 - yellow, O - red, glycol C - brown, chain C - grey. ... Drawing of a cell membrane A component of every biological cell, the selectively permeable cell membrane (or plasma membrane or plasmalemma) is a thin and structured bilayer of phospholipid and protein molecules that envelopes the cell. ... Schematic of typical animal cell, showing subcellular components. ... In cell biology, a mitochondrion is an organelle found in the cells of most eukaryotes. ... The inside of a chloroplast Chloroplasts are organelles found in plant cells and eukaryotic algae that conduct photosynthesis. ... In cell biology, the nucleus (from Latin nucleus or nuculeus, kernel) is found in all eukaryotic cells and contains the nuclear genes which form most of the cells genetic material. ... In cell biology, the Golgi apparatus (also called a Golgi body, Golgi complex, or dictyosome) is an organelle found in most eukaryotic cells, including those of plants, animals, and fungi. ... In cell biology, a vesicle is a relatively small and enclosed compartment, separated from the cytosol by at least one lipid bilayer. ... Microtubules are protein structures found within cells. ...
