Encyclopedia > Carrefour Marinopoulos

Carrefour Marinopoulos is the greek subsidiary of the international Carrefour group. It is the biggest retail chain in Greece in terms of both turnover and number of stores. The company was formed in 1999 when Carrefur acquired Marinopoulos, a greek supermarket chain. As of 2006, the company operates 272 stores. Carrefour Marinopoulos stores are divided into three formats, differentiated by size and the range of products sold. This article or section does not cite its references or sources. ...

  • The larger hypermarkets that stock a wide range of goods are branded Carrefour. Usually these stores are on two floors, ground floor for mainly food and first floor for clothing, electronics etc. There are currently 20 Carrefour hypermarkets located in major greek cities.
  • Medioum sized supermarkets that stock groceries plus a much smaller range of non-food items are branded Champion Marinopoulos. It is the most typical store format accounting for more than the half of all Carrefour Marinopoulos stores. There are 145 Champion Marinopoulos stores located all over Greece.
  • Convenience level stores that stock mainly food are branded 5' Marinopoulos. There are 107 stores of this format located mainly in urban areas.

It should be noted that the Carrefour group, through a different (Dia Hellas SA) corporate umbrella though, also controls the Dia hard discount stores located in Greece.
