In the early 1990s the provincial government sought to reduce the number of municipalities in Halifax County and Cape Breton County and created a task force in 1992 to pursue this rationalization. In 1995, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality Act was implemented and the CBRM was created on August 1, 1995.
The CBRM constitutes the following now_amalgamated municipalities:
CapeBretonRegional Municipality(46°09′ N 60°10′ W, AST), or CBRM as it is commonly known, is a regionalmunicipality in the province of Nova Scotia.
CBRM was created from the former municipalities of Sydney, Glace Bay, New Waterford, North Sydney, Sydney Mines, Louisbourg, and CapeBreton County.
CBRM's culture is dominated by the Scottish Gaelic, or "Celtic", heritage common to most of CapeBreton Island, however the urban industrial area of CBRM is also influenced by a mixture of other cultures including African Canadian, Jewish, Newfoundland, Irish, and a variety of Eastern European countries.
