The borough is suburban in character around Brentwood and Shenfield but once outside these main settlements it is entirely rural. There are railway stations at Brentwood railway station, Shenfield railway station and Ingatestone which connect to Liverpool Street station in the City of London. Another major artery running through the area is the A12 dual-carrigeway, running from London past Brentwood and on to Chelmsford and then Colchester and the ports of Harwich and Felixstowe. The old Roman road (A1023) goes right through the centre of Brentwood and joins the A12 (that veers away from the town) at the far ends of Brentwood.
