History

Boxborough was first settled in 1680 and was officially incorporated in 1783. According to local folklore, the town was named because of its shape. Farmers who lived on the edges of neighboring Stow, Littleton, and Harvard were frustrated because they were too far away from church. They ended up acquiring a meetinghouse and formed a new town by combining parts of those neighboring towns. The resulting town resembled a square, so the town was called Boxborough. For most of its history, Boxborough was a rural farming community, the major commodities being sheep and cattle. Within the past fifty years, however, suburban development has drastically altered the community. Now, the town exists on the fringe between suburban and rural, with affluent suburbanites making up a large portion of the population, and the formerly dominant farmers finding themselves increasingly marginalized. Indeed, one may find a rare farm stand or horse stable on the occasion, but most residents get their fresh vegetables from the supermarket. Consequently, many would now describe Boxborough as a bedroom community, with the majority of its denizens commuting to larger towns or cities for work. A notable Boxboroughian in American history is Luther Blanchard, the fifer who was the first individual to be wounded in the American War of Independence, dying later on. Boxboroughians celebrate Luther Blanchard's martyrdom once a year by hosting a modest "Fifer's Day" parade and flea market at the main public park, Flerra Field. Events First Portuguese governor was appointed to Macau The Swedish city Karlskrona was founded as the Royal Swedish Navy relocated there. ... 1783 was a common year starting on Wednesday (see link for calendar). ... Commuters waiting for the morning train in Maplewood, New Jersey A bedroom community, dormitory town, or commuter town is a community that is primarily residential in character, with most of its workers commuting to a nearby town or city to earn their livelihood. ...

Despite the Boxboroughian celebration, Luther Blanchard was not killed immediately, but died later due to an infection stemming from the bullet-wound in his forehead. His death occurred hours after the fighting and deaths on the Lexington Green, a more accurately timed 'start' of the American Revolution.

In addition, Luther Blanchard lived and died before Boxborough was even founded; merely born in the area of Littleton that would later become Boxborough eight years following his death in 1775.
