Bowman is a town located in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,198.


Bowman is located at 33°20'52" North, 80°41'2" West (33.347658, _80.683915)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.0 km˛ (1.2 mi˛). 3.0 km˛ (1.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,198 people, 463 households, and 321 families residing in the town. The population density is 398.8/km˛ (1,034.5/mi˛). There are 532 housing units at an average density of 177.1/km˛ (459.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 29.47% White, 68.86% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 463 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.1% are married couples living together, 24.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $22,750, and the median income for a family is $29,167. Males have a median income of $25,583 versus $18,828 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,662. 30.3% of the population and 23.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.4% of those under the age of 18 and 25.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The first post office in the Town of Bowman was located at Railroad Avenue and Ott Street (later Main Street) in the store of John W. Berry, a pioneer merchant, and he served as the first postmaster.
