Botetourt County was established in 1770 from Augusta and Rockbridge counties. The James River originates in Botetourt County, near the village of Iron Gate, just south of the Allegany County border by the merger of the pristine Cowpasture River and the heavily polluted Jackson River. Botetourt County was established in 1770 from Augusta and Rockbridge counties.
The James River originates in Botetourt County, near the village of Iron Gate, just south of the Allegany County border by the merger of the pristine Cowpasture River and the heavily polluted Jackson River.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 28.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who were 65 years of age or older.
