Encyclopedia > Bonanno family

The Bonanno family is one of five mafia families said to be in control of organized crime in New York City. It is named for Joseph Bonanno.

The family was infiltrated by undercover FBI agent "Donnie Brasco" in the late 1970s, and over 120 members were arrested and convicted, nearly destroying the family.

Joe Massino is generally credited with bringing the family back from the brink of oblivion, though he was arrested in 2003 and convicted on several racketeering and murder charges in July of 2004.
