Bolsward, de eerste en grootste stad van het kwartier Westergoo, is een kantonshoofdplaats en als zoodanig de zetel van een kantongeregt; vroeger was zij de tweede der stemhebbende steden van Friesland.
Na het verlanden of opslijken van dien zeeboezem, maakten de Bolswarders gebruik van de haven van Makkum, westwaarts van daar aan de zee gelegen, tusschen beide welke plaatsen ten dien einde een kanaal gegraven is; behalve dat zij zich ook van de haven van Workum, ter berging van hunne koopvaardijschepen, bedienden.
