Blackwell is a city located in Kay County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,668.


Geography

Blackwell is located at 36°48'6" North, 97°17'23" West (36.801764, _97.289856)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.1 km˛ (5.5 mi˛). 14.1 km˛ (5.4 mi˛) of it is land and 0.18% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,668 people, 3,064 households, and 2,086 families residing in the city. The population density is 543.2/km˛ (1,407.3/mi˛). There are 3,527 housing units at an average density of 249.9/km˛ (647.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 87.26% White, 0.13% African American, 4.13% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 3.17% from other races, and 4.83% from two or more races. 5.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,064 households out of which 32.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the city the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $25,835, and the median income for a family is $31,540. Males have a median income of $25,202 versus $16,704 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,558. 17.1% of the population and 13.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.4% of those under the age of 18 and 10.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
