In the beginning the show centred on many forms of black music but by 4 it had concentrated solely on reggae music.


Miss Pat joined the programme as producer in 1985 having moved from London, where she grew up listening to all styles of Jamaican music. Since then the programme has incorporated ska, shuffle, rock steady, early reggae, Mento etc., as well as DJ, dub, dub poetry and ragga. Black Water Echo are Alun Mountford and Steve Gilbey, who previously worked together in a band called The Llamas, based in Cambridgeshire.
They had recorded some demos a few years back as Black Water Echo, and as this had worked so well, decided to continue the project under that name.
