Biwabik is a city located in St. Louis County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 954.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.2 km˛ (5.1 mi˛). 12.4 km˛ (4.8 mi˛) of it is land and 0.9 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 6.65% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 954 people, 454 households, and 266 families residing in the city. The population density is 77.2/km˛ (199.9/mi˛). There are 492 housing units at an average density of 39.8/km˛ (103.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 97.59% White, 0.00% African American, 2.10% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.10% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 454 households out of which 25.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.1% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.4% are non-families. 37.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.09 and the average family size is 2.69.


In the city the population is spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.9 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $28,359, and the median income for a family is $37,386. Males have a median income of $41,250 versus $21,136 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,182. 17.0% of the population and 11.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.9% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Biwabik also has several other "firsts." lt was the first Mesabi Range town to be served by two railroads; it had the first large mine on the Mesabi; and its mine was the first to use a steam shovel.
Biwabik was platted a mile west of Merritt, north of the Biwabik Mine.
When the Biwabik Mine began operating in 1893, John T. Jones of the Biwabik Ore Company conceived the idea of using the steam shovel to strip the overburden from the ore. Although many experienced mining men laughed at this proposal, a steam shovel was hauled overland by horses through the forest from Mesaba Station.
