Encyclopedia > Big Town

Big Town was a television melodrama which ran on the CBS network from 1950 through 1954 and on the NBC network from 1955 through 1956. Repeat episodes aired on the DuMont Network while still showing on CBS (under the title City Assignment.) Reruns were also shown under the titles Heart of the City, Headline and Byline Steve Wilson.

The stories revolved around The Illustrated Press, the largest newspaper in "Big Town", and the people who worked for it, most particularly Steve Wilson (played by Patrick McVey from 1950_1954 and by Mark Stevens from 1954-1956). Five different actresses had the role of Lorelei Kilbourne, a reporter.

Big Town had run on radio from 1937 to 1952 (Edward G. Robinson having played the role of Steve Wilson from 1937 to 1942, and Edward J. Pawley from 1943 to 1952). When it moved to television, the program was at first broadcast live, but in 1952 it moved production from New York City to Hollywood and changed format from live broadcast to film.
