Benton County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 16,537. Its county seat is Camden6.
Benton County is located in northwest Tennessee, bordering the western branch of the Tennessee River and 30 miles south of the Kentucky border. Aside from Camden, other major communities include agrarian communities Big Sandy and Holladay. It is known well in the area for its duck hunting and fishing industries, and in the past, was recognized for sorghum production, although it is no longer produced there.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,130 km˛ (436 mi˛). 1,023 km˛ (395 mi˛) of it is land and 107 km˛ (41 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 9.48% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,537 people, 6,863 households, and 4,886 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km˛ (42/mi˛). There are 8,595 housing units at an average density of 8/km˛ (22/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.44% White, 2.10% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 0.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,863 households out of which 27.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.82.
In the county, the population is spread out with 22.00% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 27.00% from 45 to 64, and 17.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 93.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.40 males.
