Capital Beltway (I-495 and I-95) (1571 words)
The Capital Beltway is the 64-mile-long Interstate freeway that encircles Washington, D.C., passing through Virginia and Maryland, carrying the Interstate I-495 designation throughout, and carrying the overlapping Interstate I-95 designation on the eastern portion of the beltway.
In 1991-92, Maryland and Virginia completed Beltway widening to eight lanes from I-270 Spur to VA-193, a distance of 5 miles; this included the American Legion Bridge and approaches to each interchange closest to the river, which was widened to 10 lanes.
The interchange between Shirley Highway (I-95, I-395) and the Capital Beltway (I-95, I-395, I-495) and between VA-644 and I-95, is being reconstructed and expanded.
Final Report Capital Beltway Update: Beltway User Focus Groups (16602 words)
The Capital Beltway is 64 miles of roadway surrounding Washington, D.C. The Capital Beltway Safety Team, led by officials from Maryland and Virginia, was formed to address safety issues on this urban interstate highway.
The primary purpose of the present project was to reassess Beltway drivers' perceptions of problems they experience on the Beltway and to document their reactions to recent improvements.
With a view toward determining how Beltway drivers' perceptions have changed since 1994, the basic structure of the 1994 focus groups was replicated in the current wave, with a few changes to enhance the sensitivity of the research to the topic of aggressive driving.
