Belmont is a city located in Gaston County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,705. Belmont is home to Belmont Abbey College.

There are 3,348 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
