Policing in the United Kingdom is divided into a number of forces.
The territorial forces use the boundaries of the local government areas (counties and Scottish regions) established in the 1974/1975 local government reorganisations (although with subsequent modifications).
Due to various Parliamentary Acts the numbers of police forces in the United Kingdom has varied drastically since the Metropolitan Police Act of 1829 set up the first modern police force in London.
