Belfast is an unincorporated community within Plainfield Township in Northampton County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The community has no legal status as an incorporated municipality and all municipal services are provided by Plainfield Township. The Census Bureau has defined a census_designated place (CDP) with the same name for statistical purposes, although the local understanding of the community may differ somewhat from the census definition. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,301.


The community is located off Pennsylvania State Highway 33, about 10 miles northeast of Bethlehem.


Geography

Belfast is located at 40°46'60" North, 75°16'35" West (40.783213, -75.276481)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.8 km˛ (1.1 mi˛). 2.8 km˛ (1.1 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,301 people, 505 households, and 382 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 456.7/km˛ (1,181.0/mi˛). There are 517 housing units at an average density of 181.5/km˛ (469.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.00% White, 0.46% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 505 households out of which 29.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.9% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% are non-families. 18.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 2.93.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.7 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $43,784, and the median income for a family is $56,894. Males have a median income of $37,000 versus $23,362 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $19,155. 6.6% of the population and 3.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
