Emanuel Levy : Review - Being Julia (878 words)
Julia is smart enough to know that she's rapidly becoming a woman of a certain age, realizing that the roles she used to play--on stage and off--will inevitably change.
When Julia's young lover callously tries to relegate her to a supporting role, she summoning all of her considerable powers, and masterminds a brilliant revenge that places her exactly where she belongs, center stage and in the spotlight.
Being Julia combines lush period atmosphere and elegant costumes with a series of timeless observations about women, life, and art, unapologetically using overtly theatrical devices like high melodrama, betrayal, and revenge.
The Jujube Review - Being Julia (531 words)
"Being Julia," based on a story by W. Somerset Maugham, is the latest film to address the world of the stage and offer a mostly negative image of the community that surrounds it.
Throughout the highs and lows of Julia's somewhat scandalous adventure, Bening imbues her with a captivating live-wire charisma that combines strength, frailty, joy, sorrow, and the manipulativeness of a woman for whom all life is drama.
The weakest elements of the film are the cheap shots used to generate sympathy for the heroine, including Julia's close relationship with her son (Thomas Sturridge) and the unwavering loyalty of her maid/dresser (Juliet Stevenson).
