Basketball has been played consistently at the Summer Olympic Games since 1936, with a demonstration event in 1904. The United States have won all the gold medals in the men's competition from 1936-2004, with the exception of 1972, 1988 (Soviet Union), 1980 (Yugoslavia) when they did not participate because of the boycott of the Olympic games, and in 2004 when Argentina won the gold medal.
