Barnegat is a census-designated place located in Ocean County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,690.


Geography

Barnegat is located at 39°45'15" North, 74°13'16" West (39.754153, -74.221239)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²). 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,690 people, 595 households, and 443 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 243.5/km² (631.1/mi²). There are 640 housing units at an average density of 92.2/km² (239.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 95.68% White, 0.53% African American, 0.12% Native American, 1.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 1.72% from two or more races. 2.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 595 households out of which 39.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% are non-families. 18.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.31.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 105.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.5 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $55,040, and the median income for a family is $59,100. Males have a median income of $36,755 versus $24,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $21,431. 6.0% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Vessels bound to New York from the South generally run for this light, and it is of great importance that it should be a first-order light, and so arranged as not to be mistaken.
To protect the new lighthouse from the southward migration of the inlet, it was located some 900 feet south of the original tower, providing a buffer zone that would hopefully last many years.
The first-order Fresnel lens for the Barnegat Lighthouse accounted for a quarter of the projectÂ’s $60,000 budget and was fabricated in 1856 by Henry LePaute of Paris, France.
