Encyclopedia > Banned by Gaussian

GAUSSIAN is a well known and widely used quantum chemical calculations software package. There are many prominent scientists, including some of those who originally wrote substantial parts of the program, who claim to be banned by Gaussian Inc. from ever using the software. However, in most cases the reality of the situation is that the scientist in question actually writes computer code for a competing company. As a result GAUSSIAN, Inc. has declined to provide the GAUSSIAN source code to these individuals. Instead, most of these scientists often use versions of GAUSSIAN that only include binary files. In this way, GAUSSIAN, Inc. has protected its property without preventing others from using the program. Moreover, creators of Gaussian point out that they publish their algorithms, making them part of the public domain and accessible to others. GAUSSIAN is a computational chemistry software program. ... Chemistry (in Greek: χημεία) is the science of matter and its interactions with energy and itself (see physics, biology). ... Computer software (or simply software) refers to one or more computer programs and data held in the storage of a computer for some purpose. ...

GAUSSIAN - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (245 words)
GAUSSIAN is a computational chemistry software program, first written by John Pople.
Gaussian quickly became one of the most popular and widely-used computational chemistry packages.
This practice is criticized for inhibiting the ability of those banned to peer review papers that use the GAUSSIAN code.
BIGpedia - GAUSSIAN - Encyclopedia and Dictionary Online (161 words)
The Gaussian package was first written by John Pople and the name originates from Pople's use of Gaussian orbitals to speed calculations over those using Slater-type orbitals.
Pople and his research group were among those who pushed the development of the package, including cutting-edge research into quantum chemistry and other methods.
Gaussian, Inc. has invited the ire of many in the computational chemistry community by banning many prominent researchers in the field from using their software.
