A town of 18,757 inhabitants, Milledgeville is the seat of Baldwin County, in central Georgia.
In December 1804 Milledgeville was declared by the legislature to be the new capital of Georgia.
The new town, modeled after Savannah and Washington, D.C., was located on the edge of the frontier, where the Coastal Plain merges into the Piedmont.
