Encyclopedia > Athlon X2
This article contains information about scheduled or expected future computer chips.
It may contain preliminary or speculative information, and may not reflect the final specification of the product.

The Athlon X2 processor is the latest line of processors based on K10 microarchitecture, codenamed Kuma, featuring the same core enhancements as other deriviatives of K10, and split power planes, but with the lacking of shared L3 cache. The processor was fabricated on 65 nm process, with a maximum TDP of 45 W. Image File history File links Current_event_marker. ... The AMD K10 is AMDs next generation of processors. ... The AMD K8 generation of CPUs is the successor to the AMD K7 generation of CPUs. ... Athlon 64 X2 Logo Athlon 64 X2 E6 3800+ The Athlon 64 X2 is the first dual-core desktop CPU manufactured by AMD. It is essentially a processor consisting of two Athlon 64 cores joined together on one die with additional control logic. ... The AMD K10 is AMDs next generation of processors. ... Naming

The processors would be branded as "Athlon X2", with "64" removed, which possibly lessen the significance of 64-bit computing support. The AMD64 or x86-64 is a 64-bit processor architecture invented by AMD. It is a superset of the x86 architecture, which it natively supports. ...

The model numbers of the new line of processors under the K10 microarchitecture was apprently changed from PR ratings used in its predecessors, the Athlon 64 X2, the processor model was in alpha numeric format as xx-@### where xx are alphabetical letters, indicating the processor class (the first letter) and typical TDP power level (the latter letter). The character @ being the series indicator which is different for different brandings, and the last three characters (###) being the model number where higher the number the greater the performance. The AMD K10 is AMDs next generation of processors. ... The PR rating system was developed by AMD in the mid-1990s as a method of comparing their x86 processors to those of rival Intel. ... The Thermal Design Power (TDP) represents the maximum amount of power the thermal solution in a computer system is required to dissipate. ...

Not much information was known about the details of the model numbers, but the processors will be divided into three segments, Premium, Intermediate and Value, with Intermediate will begin the model number with processor class "B", with three levels of TDP, more than 65W, 65W, and less than 65W, indicated with letters "P", "S", and "E" respectively.

Sightings

Forum OCWorkBench has posted processor images and screenshots of CPU-Z reconginition of the processor from Computex 2007 [1], as well as the processor being plugged in a AsRock 939Dual-SATA2 motherboard and achieved 2472.0 MHz core frequency. [2] CPU-Z is a freeware system profiler application for Microsoft Windows that detects the central processing unit, RAM, motherboard chipset, and other hardware features of a modern personal computer, and presents the information in one window. ...
