ASO: The Test (532 words)
The ASO test is ordered when a patient has symptoms that the doctor suspects may be due to an illness caused by a previous streptococcal infection.
ASO test results can be reported in several different ways; however, the interpretation is generally the same: the higher the result is, the more antibody that is present in the blood (unless a titer is performed, which is a ratio and therefore is interpreted differently).
ASO levels peak at about 4 to 6 weeks after the illness and then taper off but may remain at detectible levels for several months after the strep infection has resolved.
ASO titer (386 words)
This test is used to detect prior infection by Group A Streptococcus, the bacterium responsible for diseases such as glomerulonephritis, rheumatic fever, bacterial endocarditis, and scarlet fever.
ASO testing demonstrates the presence of antibodies generated by the body against the enzyme streptolysin O, which is produced by the bacteria and which causes destruction of red blood cells.
The ASO antibody may be detected in the blood for weeks or months after the primary infection has been eradicated.
