Army Group E was created on 1 January 1943. It was distributed throughout the Mediterranean area including units in Crete, Serbia and Croatia. In retreat of the German armed forces from the Balkans the group withdrew in the spring 1945 to Austria with some units to southern Germany. It was joined with Army Group F and dissolved on 25 May 1945. A member of Army Group E who later rose to prominence was Kurt Waldheim.
