Arcadia Lakes is a town located in Richland County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 882.


Geography

Arcadia Lakes is located at 34°3'1" North, 80°57'51" West (34.050223, _80.964113)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.7 km˛ (0.6 mi˛). 1.3 km˛ (0.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.3 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 18.46% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 882 people, 379 households, and 278 families residing in the town. The population density is 654.9/km˛ (1,685.6/mi˛). There are 389 housing units at an average density of 288.8/km˛ (743.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 94.90% White, 3.63% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 379 households out of which 24.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.8% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 22.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.72.


In the town the population is spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 18.5% from 25 to 44, 34.6% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 49 years. For every 100 females there are 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.2 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $66,382, and the median income for a family is $79,179. Males have a median income of $56,125 versus $35,682 for females. The per capita income for the town is $37,762. 2.9% of the population and 0.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.1% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

A town at this location was not laid out until 1885, when it was anticipated that a branch line of the Burlington Railroad would be extended through the corner of the county and on up to Comstock and Sargent.
Arcadia has not always been a "quiet peaceful town." In 1953 a tornado struck nearby, killing eleven people, ten from one family.
