Safeway put its Houston division up for sale in 1988.

After the acquisition of Safeway's stores, AppleTree operated 94 stores, including 48 in Houston, 21 in Austin and 25 others scattered through Central and East Texas. It was the third-largest grocery chain operating in Houston. The stores continued to operate with the Safeway name until 1989.

In 1992, AppleTree sought bankruptcy protection. Most of their stores were sold to competitors or closed soon thereafter. In late 1993, ten stores were sold to Kroger and 12 stores were sold to Randall's Food Markets, but three were closed. Ironically, some of the former Safeway stores Randall's purchased from AppleTree became part of Safeway once again when Safeway bought Randall's a few years later.
