The ALF were originally formed in the UK during the 1970s by animal rights activist Ronnie Lee, who had previously been involved with a group called The Band of Mercy as well as the Hunt Saboteurs Association.
The Earth LiberationFront (ELF), a separate but related group, took responsibility for an arson attack on a mink research lab in Anthony Hall on the campus of Michigan State University on New Year's Eve (December) of 1999.
A breakaway group from the ALF naming itself the Justice Department was believed to have been responsible for the sending of a number of letter bombs to individuals involved in fox hunting, the fur trade or vivisectors.
The AnimalLiberationFront (ALF) is a name used internationally by animal-rights activists who engage in direct action on behalf of animals, or in protest at the animal-testing (vivisection), fur, meat, egg, or dairy industries.
In 1965, the group was re-created, this time called the Hunt Saboteurs Assocation, which laid false scents, blew hunting horns to send the hounds in the wrong direction, set off smoke bombs, and lay down between the hunters and the fox.
Early ALF covert operations tended to centre on the removal, or liberation, of animals from vivisection laboratories.
