Encyclopedia > Albur

An Albur in Mexico is a word game consisting of a double entendre, usually with a sexual undertone. It is more common among lower income people, and its use is considered somewhat in bad taste when not among friends, especially in the presence of women. It is a form of comedy in Mexico and many artists and comedians are reknowned for their skills in this, like Victor Trujillo and Polo Polo. Usually, the albur consists of "winning" by leaving the other person without something to answer. The purpose of the albur is to show your masculinity or the other person's lack of it, by either making a remark of being the aggressor (or male) in the sexual intercourse, or making the other person be the female (or both at the same time). In Mexico, the receptive side of the sexual intercourse is considered the woman and the giving side the male, regardless of whether it be male to male intercourse or male to female.
