Playing career

Montoya backstopped the Texas Tornado of the North American Hockey League prior to attending the University of Michigan for three years, beginning in the 2002-03 season. He would enjoy success at Michigan, especially during his final season in 2004-05, where he posted a record of 30 wins, 7 losses and 3 ties.Team USA won gold at the 2004 World Junior Championship with Al Montoya backstopping them and was named to the all-tournament team. Following his final season with Michigan, Montoya was drafted by the Rangers in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft with the sixth overall pick. He made his professional debut with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League in the 2005-06 season. The Texas Tornado are a Junior A hockey team located in Frisco, Texas, USA.
