Although theoretically the word can refer to the discrimination against any age group (e.g. prejudice specifically targeted at fortysomethings), ageism usually comes in one of two forms: discrimination against youth, and discrimination against the elderly.
The AgeDiscrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older from employment discrimination based on age.
It is also unlawful to retaliate against an individual for opposing employment practices that discriminate based on age or for filing an agediscrimination charge, testifying, or participating in any way in an investigation, proceeding, or litigation under the ADEA.
Age limitations in apprenticeship programs are valid only if they fall within certain specific exceptions under the ADEA or if the EEOC grants a specific exemption.
Agediscrimination is discrimination against a person or group on the grounds of age.
Some complain that social stratification in age groups causes outsiders to incorrectly stereotype and generalize the group, for instance that all adolescents are equally immature, violent or rebellious, listen to rock or rap music and do drugs.
Sexual orientation discrimination is discrimination against individuals, couples or groups based on sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation.
