Adventureland
Disneyland
Attraction type Themed Land
Theme Remote jungles of Asia, Africa and South Pacific
Opening date July 17, 1955

Adventureland is one of the "themed lands" at the many Magic Kingdom-style parks run by The Walt Disney Company around the world. It is themed to resemble the remote jungles in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, desert islands, South America, and the South Pacific. Adventureland provides a 1950s view of exotic adventure, capitalizing on the post-war Tiki craze. Lush vegetation resembles jungles while elements of the “other” surround the visitor. Tribal performance masks, congo drums, non-American totem poles, exotic animal statues, and architecture of Pacific influence make for a confined area wherein industry and technology take a back seat to uncharted nature.[1] Noted art historian David T. Doris explains Adventureland as, “a pastiche of imaginary colonial spaces, conflated within the green and foliate milieu of ‘the Jungle.’”[2] A Māori man retouches the painted tattoo on a carved wooden tiki at Whakarewarewa Model Village, New Zealand, 1905. ...

Disneyland's Adventureland was originally envisioned as True-Life Adventureland, and was to be based on Walt's famous award winning nature documentaries on Africa and Asia. The land was originally supposed to have real animals from Africa to inhabit a jungle river, but when zoologists told Walt the real animals would lay around or hide, so the imagineers built mechanical animals instead. Adventureland opened with the Jungle Cruise as its star attraction, until the Swiss Family Treehouse was added years later. With the groundbreaking technology of audio animatronics Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room was added nearby the land's entry bridge. Many years later Indiana Jones Adventure was added with the expansion of Adventureland and gave the entire land a 1930's theme. The Swiss Family Treehouse was redone and made Tarzan's Treehouse and Adventureland has remained the same since. Tokyo Disneyland's Adventureland is a mish-mash of the various Adventureland interpretations. It features a unique ride - Western River Railroad - and a different version of Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room, minus the Walt Disney tag, with a more Hawaiian feel. It features a sub-land, similar to the Magic Kingdom Adventureland, based on New Orleans Square at Disneyland, which features Pirates of the Caribbean. World Bazaar's buildings fade into New Orleans. Skull Rock at Adventure Isle
Skull Rock at Adventure Isle

The fourth Adventureland is more Asian in style, with heavy Indian influences and Morrocan decor. It seems the Aladdin Disney classic inspired the Imagineers when designing the entrance area of the Parisian Adventureland, possibly because the film was in production when the land was being built. Original attractions include Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril, a compact steel roller coaster around an abandoned Cambodian temple, with one inversion (the first ever on a Disney ride); Adventure Isle, an island of detailed walkways and hidden secrets; and Le Passage Enchanté d'Aladdin (the enchanted Aladdin's passage), a walk-through in the Agrabah Bazaar tracing the story of Disney's Aladdin. There is no Jungle Cruise, largely due to the unsuitable Parisian climate. A "Jungle Expedition" attraction was planned at the opening of the park, but was cancelled when the resort hit financial difficulties. Criticism

Though obviously rooted in Polynesia and the American idea of jungle “other”, Adventureland goes beyond that by not explicitly labeling anything. Middle-eastern architectural motifs, North African building styles, and African "primitive" elements mix Adventureland into a culturally and ethnically morphed space native to nowhere. An intentional lack of cultural explanation plays into the space as a tourist relief from reality. Walt Disney's original intent was to bring the “unusual” foreign experiences to Americans attending his park. With more postmodern “progression”, Adventureland now represents near-kitsch.[1]

Widen Your World - Adventureland (3125 words)
Adventureland took that poorly-informed but comfortably American prejudice and transposed it into a beautiful world of African, Polynesian, Asian and Caribbean settings where the native populations were just out of sight (that is, when they weren't menacing or entertaining the guests).
And given that Adventureland relies more heavily on horticulture to carry its theme than any other part of the park, the comparison between today's greenery and that of the first several years is absolutely stark.
Either way, an open and airy part of Adventureland once given over to earth tones, rough textures and forms hewn from stone and wood is now a party to glossy, vibrant golds, gleaming metals, brightly colored carpets and canopies that are squeezed tightly into the middle of the old plaza.
Widen Your World - The Caribbean Arcade (863 words)
This restaurant was the first location that visitors to Adventureland would encounter on their trip across the bridge from Main Street USA or the hub.
Housed in a large building awash in the architectural styles of at least two separate continents, the Adventureland Veranda was home to some of the Magic Kingdom's most mismatched decor, best cast member costumes and undeniably intriguing entrees.
The Adventureland Veranda entered into a cyclical operating schedule in late 1993, which kept it closed two days out of the week except in peak seasons.
