Encyclopedia > A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature

A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature is a collection of biographies of writers by John W. Cousin, published around 1910. Most of the entries consist of only one paragraph but some entries like William Shakespeare are quite lengthy.

It is notable for being the 5,000th e-book to be provided by the Distributed Proofreaders project, to Project Gutenberg. It was released on August 21, 2004 as EBook #13240 (http://gutenberg.net/etext/13240).

Jorge Luis Borges (2495 words)
Borges was profoundly influenced by European culture, English literature, and such thinkers as Berkeley, who argued that there is no material substance; the sensible world consists only of ideas, which exists for so long as they are perceived.
The never-ending process of cataloguing inspired one of Borges's most famous short stories, 'The Library of Babel' (1941), in which the faithful catalog of the Library is supplemented with "thousands and thousands of false catalogs, the proof of the falsity of those false catalogs, a proof of the falsity of the true catalog".
The idea for the short story 'Borges y yo' was came from the double, who was looking at him - the alter ego, the other I. There is a well-known man, who writes his stories, a name in some biographical dictionary, and the real person.
