One of Dostoevsky's more obscure works, "A Nasty Story" was written and published in 1862 following his brief tour of Spain. Dostoevsky's use of humor, silly anecdotes, and characters unaware of their own absurd surroundings make this story more accessible than some of his other work. 1862 was a common year starting on Wednesday (see link for calendar). ... The main characters are three men working at a dubiously titled "parlor" in Spain. As the story proceeds, the reader learns that it is not a parlor at all, but a place where young men get their jollies through sexual intercourse with donkeys. Much of the story's text amounts to a very detailed description of the various practices and positions to be undertaken when, as Dostoevsky's character Pedro Mikailinovichachovsky Franco puts it, "banging the most languid of beasts". While the above is humorous (and reminds me of a joke...) It is not accurate. The actual Nasty story is about the dangers of letting down your guard too much. Or perhaps a psychological study of self -consciousness and the desire to always be understood, loved, and admired. Mix those things together with a severely regimented class-conscious society and a shaker full of vodka and you can get: A Nasty Story. (oh, and one of lifes lessons: never under any circumstances mix vodka and champaign.)
