In spite of hosting the event, the U.S. team was only able to finish 6th, one of their lowest showings in international play. This led some analysts to call it the end of the Dream Team.[citation needed]

The final game between Argentina and Yugoslavia was very controversial. With only O.8 seconds left, and with the score tied at 75-75, the greek referee refused to give Argentina two decisive free throws after a hard foul on argentine player Hugo Sconochini who was going clear to the hoop. Yugoslavia finally won the game in overtime despite the protests of the Argentine players. Argentina finished the tournament with the best record, losing only one game.
