The World Indoor Games were arranged by the IAAF and held in Paris, France in March 1985. In 1987 the championship was renamed to the World Indoor Championships. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is the international governing body for the sport of athletics (known in the US as track and field). It was founded in 1912 at its first Congress in Stockholm, Sweden by representatives from 17 national athletics federations as the International Amateur Athletics Federation. ... The 2nd IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics (253 words)
Five indoor world records in men's and women's events were marked in the 2nd World Indoor Championships.
The other world record was set by Mikhail Shchennikov of USSR in 5000m walk on the last day of the Championships with 18:27.10, breaking his own world record marked in Indianapolis.
Japanese athletes have been participating in the Championships in sprint and jumping events since Paris in 1985, and a Japanese high school student, Takahiro Watanabe of Niihama-Higashi High School was the first Japanese athlete to enter 400m.

The International Association of Athletics Federations World Indoor Championships were inaugurated as the World Indoor Games in 1985 in Paris, France and were subsequently renamed in 1987 as they are known today.
The 200 m was absent from the 2006 championships in Moscow, as in recent years it has become too predictable.
In their short history the championships have seen Mozambique's Maria Mutola claim an incredible 6 gold medals in the women's 800 m from 1993 to 2004, her only defeat coming at the hands of Ludmila Formanová of the Czech Republic in 1999 in a championship record of 1 minute 56.9 seconds that still stands.
