As the competitive war between the NFL and the American Football League reached its peak, the two leagues agreed to merge on June 8, 1966. Major rule changes

  • Goal posts offset from the goal line, painted bright yellow, between 3 to 4 inches in diameter, and with uprights 20 feet tall above the cross bar were made standard in the NFL.
