What you need to consider is this is per 100,000. Now look at the populations of these states and do the math. THE STATES WITH STRICTER GUN CONTROL LAWS HAVE MORE DEATHS BY CRIMES WITH FIREARMS. Go to the department of justice web page and look at the real Statistics |

Why try to band guns? Not our fault people sell guns to people who should not deserve them, Gun dealers as my self im shur we sell to people who actually have handgun licences. Many people just go to pawn shops and easly buy a gun without a licence. |

Of course D.C. has the highest rate. It has a low population, is 100% heavily urbanized and has a high incidence of poverty. But you're comparing apples to oranges and intentionally obscuring the issue. Focus instead on the next several states, which provide a more meaningful basis of comparison. Gun legislation there is much more permissive. |

It is just silly to compare DC to the *States* in this list. DC is a city--if viewed as a state, it skews the numbers in almost every category. I think it is fine to include it in this list to be complete, but it should be considered an outlier in any analysis. |

Is there a stat that shows the rate of change in firearms deaths per 100,000 over a period of the last 10 or 20 years or so? Also, is there a stat that shows only firearm related murder rates per 100,000, while excluding firearms suicides, firearms accidents, justifiable shootings, and shootings by law enforcement? I'm interested in what the "actual" murder rate by criminals using a firearm is, and how that rate has changed over time. |

I was wondering what the date of information on these statistics are and whether the DC Handgun ban had been enacted before these statistics were taken. |

I did as Christian and Lucas suggested and went to the census bureau and to the department of justices website and compared the numbers. Oakland, CA has a high rate of violent crimes, just about as high as DC; However, there is no gun ban in Oakland. If the Gun Ban is so good then why is the crime in DC so high. Oakland is just as poverty stricken so you can't say it is just because of poverty. |
