StateMaster was developed in order to provide a free educational resource for people looking for updated and essential
information about the United States, giving people a greater insight into the study of our country. We seek to promote
knowledge and education of the United States, by creating a central location where states can be compared on just about
anything. We hope to create greater awareness and promote educated discussion of policy with reference to empirical data. We
have created a site that's a quick and ready reference, so that ordinary citizens can have greater access to the figures that
shape our nation and thus be more involved in the political process, as well as be more educated participants in the community
Our overall mission, with both StateMaster and NationMaster (see below), is to
bridge the gaps of misunderstanding in the world and provide ways of seeing the differences that divide us, and the
similarities that unite us. If you would like to join us in this mission, and be a part of a community of people from all over
the world, consider becoming a Volunteer Editor.
StateMaster's Content Manager and Chief Writer is John D Steinmetz, a native of South Dakota who formerly worked for the US
Forest Service and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Educated in political science, geography and history in New
York, he has traveled through all the lower 48 states on a Kawasaki KLR motorcycle, and attributes his safe passage to
tremendously helpful and warm individuals in such faraway places as Milford Utah, Elkhart Indiana and Brooklyn New York. This
website is dedicated to those folks all over the USA who, without suspicion or personal gain, lend a helping hand to anyone
passing through. Your selflessness is what makes America great.
We are also the makers of NationMaster, the world's largest database of statistical
comparisons between countries, as well as FactBites, a unique search engine which gives
you meaningful sentences instead of jumbled keywords.
